A few years ago, shortly after a national election, I read a devotional on Jeremiah chapter 7. If you read the passage, it becomes clear that the biblical kingdom of Judah had come to think of their society as above reproach; after all they were God’s chosen people. They entered into worship of God with an unfettered conscience (a conscience lacking self-control) and an inflated view of their own righteousness. They were blind to their sin and blind to the impact of those sins on their society. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God takes them to task, revealing their true behavior and sinful lifestyle.
